What do we mean by “general”?
While teachers enact most high-leverage practices with careful attention to subject area, there are some high-leverage practices that are “general,” meaning that teachers may enact them similarly regardless of the academic content. An example is the work of building respectful relationships with students. While certainly teachers can (and should) engage in this practice work with children inside each subject area and through the academic content, there are also many “general” ways they might build relationships with students, such as by engaging children in small, relationship-building conversations throughout the school day.
