Practice-based Programs

While there is no single curriculum or sequence for a practices-based teacher education, programs that take this approach share some common features:

  • They are built on a shared vision of what skilled and ethical teaching looks like
  • They center on a set of specific, high-leverage practices that teachers need to become competent in before graduating
  • They offer teacher candidates ample opportunity to learn and refine their practice in a deliberate and recurring cycle
  • They prioritize and teach content knowledge that is essential to candidates’ ability to skillfully implement high-leverage practices
  • They use common performance assessments that measure candidates’ progress toward competency with high-leverage practices
